A new film on the Indian diaspora experience in America is currently under production. The film Silhouettes, is the creation of Chicago based film director, Tom Silva, whose first film the Quiet was named best independent film by the Chicago Screen Magazine. To Silva, the film is a reflection of the Indian experience in North America and reflects his perception that Indian-Americans are under-represented in mainstream American cinema. Through his films and music he is on a mission to bridge the gap that he sees between mainstream perceptions and the reality of the Indian American experience. Silhouettes, the latest film [...]

I’ll begin with a caveat to the feature below: I am not a fan of Bollywood! And, Bollywood trivia, memorabilia and the like can barely elicit an intelligent response for me. In fact, the only Bollywood movie I ever went to at the cinema, while growing up in Mumbai was Sholay. However, while Bollywood per se does not interest me, I was very intrigued by an on-going exhibition of a unique genre of art linked to Bollywood or Hindi film advertising at Toronto’s venerable art institution, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). The exhibition, organized by the Institute for Contemporary Culture [...]

Have you ever heard of visualisation? It is something we all do on a regular basis in our daily lives. Visualization is using your creative imagination to see something the way you want it. People often associate visualization as conjuring up a mental image of something you want to manifest in your life. The principle behind it is that everything is first created in the mind. If you see something you desire or want clearly in your mind, and focus on it, the probability is that it will occur in your life such as success, health, positive qualities etc. Lately, [...]

Kanchan Raste, who also goes by the pseudonym of “Chaitrali”, which means “Arrival of Spring”, moved to Canada in 2000 from India. Growing up, Kanchan, was influenced by the rich cultural heritage of her country. The colors, textures, seasons, sounds and smells inspired her on every step of the way to express herself through her art. While Indian Classical Music and Yoga are two of her other passions, fine arts has remained her chosen medium for expressing herself. Kanchan specializes in mixed media and combines them together to bring out her true expressions on paper. Many of her paintings are [...]

As we come closer to the end of the school year, both students and teachers are looking forward to the break. As a parent, you are probably already wondering what to make your child do during all that free time. Some of you besides summer camps and other programs will go to the store and buy activity books. If you are a parent who feel that a child should do some studies even during the break, instead of randomly picking any books I would like to suggest a few things to get the best results. Understand the concept, that in [...]

Part I – Ancient Symbolism and Hidden meaning of Shiv-Ling In the last article, we saw how embarking on the journey of the life of a student is considered a major event in Hinduism and Vedic literature. In this article we review the advancement of science and technology in ancient India, its symbolism and how we relate to it today. Once the student left his home and started living with his Guru in the ashram, the days used to be filled with hard work, starting at pre-dawn and ending somewhere in the early hours of night. The students were made [...]

It is that time of the year where schools begin testing to see what the student has learned during the year. Even though studying is a major part of doing well on the test, knowing how to take a test is an equally important part of getting a good grade. For this article I will focus on some test taking strategies with the emphasis on multiple choice questions. Preparing for the test: Try to find out the areas that would be emphasized on the test. Find out about other factors such as timing, being allowed to use scratch paper etc. [...]

I would often ask Dad why couldn’t he have milk with sugar like everyone else and his response would always be – ‘because honey is a more pure form of sugar and is also good for you and thus I choose honey’. Followed by,’ you should try it, you will like it’. Well after hearing the sermon about the benefits of having milk with honey instead of sugar I did finally try it one day [...]
